As Summer Nears, Hurricane Threat Increases

AS SUMMER NEARS, HURRICANE THREAT INCREASES
Berkley Mid-Atlantic Group Encourages Business Owners to Prepare

RICHMOND, Va. (May 30, 2014) – The Atlantic hurricane season officially gets underway on June 1. Whether the East Coast sees another quiet year or increased activity remains to be seen, but one thing is for certain: business owners must prepare for the worst.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration predicts a near-normal to below-normal active 2014 hurricane season with 8 to 13 named storms (3 to 6 becoming hurricanes and 1 to 2 becoming major hurricanes). Of course, it only takes one hurricane to damage a region.

“That’s why we recommend that all property owners make the same hurricane preparations each year — regardless of the forecast,” said Berkley Mid-Atlantic Group President Susan N. Grady. “Have a crisis communications and disaster plan in place to ensure that your company’s response procedures are organized and well planned in the event of an emergency. Most importantly, be sure that plan is communicated to employees.”

Formalized plans can result in less severe injuries to employees and can help minimize business damage and loss. In the event of building damage, Grady added that owners and risk managers should know what their business interruption insurance will actually cover, and whether the business will be compensated for lost income if the company has to leave its site because of disaster-related damage.

“Having that knowledge at your fingertips in a crisis can be the difference between welcoming back customers shortly after the storm passes to closing your doors for an indefinite period of time,” Grady said. According to the Insurance Institute for Business and Home Safety, an estimated 25 percent of businesses do not reopen following a major disaster.
